How to get the most out of your initial appointment

Taking the first step in reaching out to a solicitor can feel very overwhelming – particularly for something as personal as divorce or children matters. Whilst scary, legal advice is crucial. It is the starting point to gain a better understanding of your rights, and insight into the legal ramifications, cost estimates, and potential next steps.

Our initial fixed fee consultation is a meeting lasting an hour or so with one of our specialist solicitors at one of our offices (or virtually), where you will have the opportunity to discuss your situation, receive bespoke advice, and gain a clearer understanding of how best to move forward. The meeting is then followed up with a written note of the discussions, some factsheets, and other helpful information. You will be provided with a cost estimate for your case, and advice on next steps moving forward.

As the Assistant Office Manager at E J Coombs, I work closely with our team of solicitors, support staff, and clients. Aside from assisting with the day-to-day admin and legal tasks, my aim is to help you walk into your initial meeting feeling confident and prepared.

Here are a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your consultation:-

1. Be Honest & Open

Your initial appointment is strictly confidential and so it is important to be truthful, even if it may feel uncomfortable. We are here to listen, not judge – our main goal is to help you.

2. Write down any questions beforehand

This is not crucial, but may help avoid forgetting the things you really wanted to ask. Note down any questions about the legal processes you may have, any goals you would like to achieve, as well as any specific concerns. Being prepared will help ensure the appointment is productive and focused.

3. Bring someone for support (if you feel you need to).

This is your appointment so you can bring anyone you feel will provide you with the best moral support. Sometimes it can make the process easier, having a trusted family member or friend to help and support you in taking that first step.

4. Bring any relevant documents

To help us help you, bringing any relevant paperwork can be very helpful (if this applies to you). This might include any current written agreements, existing court documents or orders, correspondence etc.
