How to communicate effectively with your solicitor

If you’ve instructed a solicitor, this can often be one of the most stressful periods of your life. Emotions are high, timelines may feel overwhelming, and you may be unsure on what to do and when to do it.

From my perspective as the Office Manager, I meet clients when they first arrive at the office and support their case throughout. In my view, clear communication can make a huge difference, for your own peace of mind. Below are some simple ways to help your case move as smoothly as possible:-

Be honest

Your solicitor can only help you based on the information they are provided with. All details are important, even if they feel minor – or any you may be uncomfortable sharing. By sharing everything upfront, it allows your solicitor to prepare more effectively, and protect you in the long run.

Don’t worry about saying the ‘’wrong’’ thing

A very common concern is ‘’I don’t know what to say’’. This is completely normal when going through a tough life change. You don’t always need to know what to say. Our experienced solicitors are here to guide you on every step.

All discussions are also completely confidential and even correspondence sent to the other person is reviewed by you first.

Organisation is key

Most family law cases often involve a large number of documents, dates, and ongoing updates. By keeping on top of things, this saves time, reduces stress, and can limit costs.

A few helpful tips:

  • Keep copies of documents in one place (digital or physical)
  • Write down questions as they come up so you don’t forget them
  • Note important dates, conversations, or changes in circumstances

Remember you are part of a team

It is not solely your solicitor you will be in contact with throughout your case, there is a whole team who you will likely come across and who are here to help you. From the receptionist at the front desk to greet you before your appointment, to paralegals working hard behind the scenes. The Accounts Department are also there answering any fee queries you may have.

The whole team are working together, for you – every step of the way.

Update us with any changes

Changes in schedules, contact information, employment, living arrangements, or family circumstances can affect your case.

Even if you’re not sure whether something matters legally, it’s always better to inform your legal team than to assume it’s insignificant.

Keeping us in the loop helps avoid surprises and keeps your case moving forward smoothly.

Ask us questions

If you are ever unsure, just ask. If it doesn’t make sense, you can ask. If you need further clarification, just ask. If you are unsure what the next step is, just ask. We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have, to reduce anxiety and stress, in an already vulnerable situation. Ultimately, it is what we are here for.
