A paralegal or legal assistant supports one or multiple solicitors with a variety of legal and administrative tasks.
I have been a paralegal in the family law sector for over 8 years now. On a day-to-day basis at E J Coombs, I support all our family law solicitors, and my roles include:-
· Initially drafting legal documents, including correspondence, legal briefings and Court applications
· Organising case files and ensuring documents are filed correctly
· Often being the first point of communication for clients and other legal professionals
· Scheduling solicitor / client meetings and conferences
· Managing our solicitors’ diaries
· Arranging payments and costs management
· Preparing for hearings, including Court bundles and other mandatory pre-hearing documents
· Conducting legal research, particularly to assist solicitors with preparing a case
Occasionally I will also attend Court hearings with clients and their barrister to support them and take notes.
A paralegal can carry out legal work (where appropriate) at a lower cost than solicitors, which is an attractive benefit for many clients. This also allows solicitors more time to focus on more complex legal work and case strategy.
At E J Coombs we have an experienced and versatile team who specialise in family law. Please do not hesitate to contact us using the links below if you would like to discuss your options further.
