We believe finding the right solicitor for your case is crucial. That is why we thought it would be useful to know our team a bit better. Each month we speak to member of staff about how they entered the world of family law and their top tips. This month we spoke to Sara, a family solicitor with over 20 years experience and co-director, based in our Danbury Office
Why did you choose a career in family law?
I used to watch LA Law with my mum and was desperate to be a hot shot lawyer like the ones I saw on TV. My real interest came when I did some work experience in a local law firm in Southend and sat in on a recorded police interview one night, and went to court seeing criminal case and family law cases. I decided to study Law at University then when I did my training contract, I realised that the police station work was not for me (I didn’t like those middle of the night calls) and found my real passion was in family cases.
What does a typical day look like for you and what are your responsibilities?
My days are quite varied – sometimes I am at court, sometimes I am just in the office seeing clients, drafting letters and documents, and helping colleagues with their cases. As well as legal work, I have some management responsibilities as a director of E J Coombs. I probably spend too much time talking to my colleagues about non law matters as well!
What advice would you offer someone going through family proceedings?
Inevitably, any sort of proceedings can be stressful, but try to keep things in perspective and ‘pick your battles’. A good lawyer can guide you what to focus on.
What is your key advice to every client?
Draw on the support from your family and friends but take the right advice from an expert – everyone’s case is different and so the advice from the parent in the playground or the neighbour who is just trying to help, may not always be right.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Helping People! I love it when I know that I have helped someone achieve the outcome they wanted or needed.
What have clients said about you in the past?
One client likened my mind to a computer and said my CPU (central processing unit) was too fast for him. I think it was a compliment….
