A Conversation with Eleanor Ithell

Family law matters are incredibly personal and we believe finding the right fit for your case is crucial. That is why we thought it would be useful to know our team a bit better. Each month we speak to member of staff about how they entered the world of family law and their top tips. This month we spoke to Ellie, our paralegal with over 7 years years experience.

Why did you choose a career in family law?

When I left secondary school, I found a legal secretary apprenticeship with a local law firm (Forman Law), which predominantly dealt with family law matters. Once I completed the apprenticeship and obtained my City and Guilds secretarial diploma, I became more involved in the day-to-day running of cases and was promoted to Paralegal. I now have over 7 years’ experience working in family law.

Family law interests me as it is an area where you can really make a difference and delivery security for clients and their families future.

What does a typical day look like for you?

On a day-to-day basis, I assist our team of solicitors with completing legal forms, preparing correspondence, liaising with clients and compiling Court bundles. On occasion, I have also attended Court to support clients and liaise with their barristers.

What is a top tip you would give to every client?

Wherever possible and provided it is in their best interests, I would encourage clients to settle matters outside of the Court forum, via solicitor negotiations, mediation or arbitration. The Court process can be a lengthy and expensive. However, I do appreciate that in some cases proceeding to Court is inevitable and, in that situation, I am focused on providing clients with the necessary support to guide them through the process as smoothly as possible.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy seeing the results of our hard work, in particular securing good results for clients to enable them (and their families) to move on with their lives after a particularly difficult period.

Also, every case and client is unique, which means my job is always interesting and I am constantly adapting to provide a tailored service to each client.

What have clients said about you in the past?

Clients have thanked me for my support and attentiveness during their matter.
