Why did you choose a career in family law?
I actually fell into the legal industry by chance, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’ve always wanted to work in a role where I could help people, and family law gives me the opportunity to do just that. It’s incredibly rewarding to support clients during such significant and often challenging times in their lives, providing them with kindness, organisation, and a sense of stability.
What does a typical day look like for you and what are your responsibilities?
A typical day for me involves keeping the office running smoothly and ensuring clients feel supported. I manage diaries, prepare documents/emails/letters and organise client files. I also assist with the ‘behind the scenes’ – including the accounting/finances, maintenance in the office, running the firm’s social media, organising team building days.
I’m also a point of contact for clients, providing them with updates or helping them navigate any uncertainties.
It’s a mix of organisation, client communication, and supporting the legal team to ensure everything stays on track.
Oh, and not forgetting those delicious coffees with biscuits!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being able to bring structure and my love of spreadsheets to assist with the general organisation of the business, and of course supporting clients. Whether it’s ensuring deadlines are met, answering a client’s question, or finding a solution to a logistical challenge, I love knowing that I’ve contributed to making their experience smoother, and helping assist the lawyers.
I also love the team I work with—they’re supportive, skilled, and genuinely care about the work we do. It’s inspiring to be part of such a dedicated group of people.
What have clients said about you in the past?
Clients have often described me as approachable, professional, and empathetic. They appreciate that I am a friendly and reliable face they can turn to for support. They also mention that my clear communication and calm demeanour make navigating their case much easier.
This was a lovely extract from a thank you card received from a client: ‘’From the first phone call, then every interaction thereafter, you were warn, friendly, and non-judgemental. This made a huge difference during an unpleasant and worrying period in my life’’.
Laura is the first point of contact for clients so give her a call today to speak with one of our solicitors. We understand how hard it can be to take that step into seeking legal advice. At E J Coombs, Laura always provides a warm welcome and will make sure you are looked after with a drink of your choice and plenty of biscuits!
